African mask shakes up a classic pot

Posted on September 5th, 2010

Here’s an example of the awesome African mask we featured yesterday (Alocasia sanderiana, USDA Hardiness Zone 11) planted in a container. It’s joined in this edgy combo by a couple of blue-green echeverias (Echeveria sp., Zones 8-11) and a creeping wire vine (Muhlenbackia axillaris, Zones 8-10) in a traditional metal urn. It’s a great contrast in styles that’s anything but predictable.

A spectacular combo at ground level

Posted on September 2nd, 2010

This jazzy little plant combo is situated along a stepping stone path in the side garden of Scott Endres in St. Paul, Minnesota. The plants here include ‘Burgundy Glow’ bugleweed (Ajuga reptans ‘Burgundy Glow’, Zones 3-9), white lantana (Lantana camara cv., Zone 11), ‘Elijah Blue’ blue fescue (Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’, Zones 4-8), and  ’Lime Glow’ juniper (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Lime Glow’, Zones 3-9).

Spice up containers with more than just plants

Posted on August 28th, 2010

Along with being a master at combining plants (see yesterday’s post), Minnesota garden designer Scott Endres also knows his way around a container, as you’ll see in the next three days. In today’s example, he’s created a miniature landscape of succulents in a low dish, but he doesn’t stop with plants. He’s also added a small sculpture, some shiny black marbles, and a few seashells. It all adds up to a fascinating tableau that’s a sure conversation piece on his back patio.

Which one of these plants is not like the others?

Posted on August 24th, 2010

Can you spot the plant that doesn’t belong? A sprig of ‘Pink Frost’ sweet potato vine (Ipomoea batatas ‘Pink Frost’, USDA Hardiness Zone 11) fits right in with this patch of ‘Burgundy Glow’ variegated bugleweed (Ajuga reptans ‘Burgundy Glow’, Zones 3-9). It’s amazing how similar they are in colors! This little illusion was created by Deanne Fortnam in her garden in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Bright and bold

Posted on August 19th, 2010

Burnished orange Asiatic hybrid lilies (Lilium ‘Make-up’) and the polished mahogany bark of Prunus serrula make a dramatic statement in Margaret de Haas van Dorsser’s Portland, Oregon, garden. This striking combination is punctuated by the peach spikes of foxtail lilies (Eremurus x isabellinus Ruiter Hybrids).
