Changing the Electrical Ballast In Your Fluorescent Light Fixture
Posted on November 13th, 2010
- Take the cover off of the light fixture and check to see if the fluorescent bulbs have black rings near the base of the bulbs? If so, replace the bulbs and then flip the switch on to see if it works.
NOTE: Black rings are a sign that the bulbs are bad. If no black rings, then the ballast probably needs to be replaced.
Replacing an electrical ballast is not a difficult thing to do. But, always use caution when it involves electricity.
FIRST, TURN OFF THE ELECTRICITY AT THE MAIN ELECTRICAL PANEL.
- Remove the light bulbs.

- ROOF: Check your roof to make sure there are no leaks. You want to check it right after a big rain storm. Take a flashlight and inspect areas that are the most likely to have a leak such as around a chimney. Also, check around the skylights and where plumbing vent pipes meet the roof. Inspect both inside and outside.
