This large, modern beach cottage named Temple Hills Residence was designed by Schola Architecture as a skin for the old existing 1950s house in Laguna Beach, California. By reinterpreting the architecture of a beach cottage and transforming the design lines into contemporary expressions of a modern lifestyle, the architects constructed a home prepared to offer its inhabitants the comfort and views they desired. The 5,000 square foot property is located on a sloping site, challenging the architects to come up with modern solutions for constructing the additions of this beautiful home. The terrain helped in constructing a house with different levels, each accentuated in a unique way. Easy access to all levels ensures the owner and guests move freely around the house and benefit from beautiful views of the surroundings.

It may not be entirely practical, entirely pretty, or indeed released to the public, but its an intriguing look at whats possible when you bend Apples rules.

Recently, my husband and I have been decorating like crazy in order to do our beautiful English Cottage style home justice. However, like so many others, we decided to wait until almost every room in the house was decorated before we started on our own bedroom. Now, I regret our decision to delay. I wish we had chosen to spruce up our own space before focusing on the rest of the house, because really, we are the ones that spend the most time in our house, so we should put ourselves first in that aspect. Now that we’re done though, we couldn’t be happier with our new space!

Whether we retreat into our bedroom to escape the chaos of everyday life or we simply need some good, old-fashioned shut-eye, the bedroom should become a private vacation. With tongue in cheek, the famed garden columnist Henry Mitchell wrote these words three decades ago, and I had to smile when I read them recently in an anthology of his work. The only loropetalum that gardeners knew way back then was the original species – Loropetalum chinense, sometimes known as the Chinese fringe flower, a rather nondescript evergreen shrub that wasn’t especially popular.

But things things have changed since then!

If the great man were alive today, I bet he’d trade his snowdrops in a heartbeat to get his hands on one of the modern loropetalum cultivars pictured here. The hybridizers and nurserymen have really done their magic. Today, bright flowers, burgundy foliage, and a graceful, arching habit combine to give loropetalum year-round appeal.
