Garden Features to make the most of Late Summer
Posted on August 1st, 2011
The twenty first of June marked the summer solstice and late summer is well under way. Whilst daylight hours will be getting shorter, there is still ample opportunity for mild summer evenings and al fresco cuisine. There are now many innovative ways to extend the use of your garden well into the autumn months.
Garden Furniture
When the British weather allows, eating outside can be a great way to bring people together and create a relaxing atmosphere. For outdoor eating, seating should be the first priority. Lightweight and foldable chairs can be conveniently stored away when not in use, to protect against the weather. Heavier furniture can be painted or varnished to protect surfaces from the elements, allowing for repeated use year after year. Foldable umbrellas are useful throughout the seasons, providing shelter through light showers and shade against the sun. For the colder months, patio heaters make outdoor spaces useable for longer periods of time.
A classic favourite among outdoor eaters, the barbecue is a staple of many summer social occasions. Unfortunately, Britain has a reputation for rainy conditions. Weather no longer need be a set back to the British barbecue, with the introduction of the barbecue hut. These bespoke wooden huts contain a central barbecue and flue, surrounded by a ring of seating. Whilst smoke from cooking escapes the hut, the thick walls insulate the interior against cold weather.
Hot Tubs
Hot tubs are a sign of luxury and comfort. For those who can afford the price tag, they are a great way to make the most of any outdoor space. Since they are heated, they can be used throughout autumn and winter. As with the barbecue hut, hot tubs are available with a range of shelters, from roofs attached to the hot tub itself, to full outdoor structures designed to house your spa. Many potential buyers are discouraged by the cost of maintenance, though renewable energies, specifically solar technology, is now being used to power hot tubs and spas.
DIY
Improving your garden, as improving your home, can be more affordable with a DIY approach. From decking to vegetable plots, making the most of your outside space needn’t cost a fortune. The key to outdoor DIY is to plan ahead and keep careful watch over weather forecasts. When using power tools, connecting to a power source can prove to be a challenge. An engine generator can provide one solution. Since your generator needs to be mobile, consider its weight, dimensions and features. The Clarke FG2000, for example, is encased in a steel frame with wheels for easy mobility. Alternatively, such generators as the Clarke IG1000 are designed to be compact for hand held use. When doing DIY, safety must be the top priority. Care should also be taken when constructing free standing structures in your garden, as in some circumstances these will require planning permission. By creating features that complement you needs and preferences, your garden can be enjoyed even once summer has drawn to an end.
