Roofing Slate Shingles

There are many types of roofing shingles available ion the market today, with the prices, durability and various other aspects of each type varying greatly. Thus, it can be confusing when you’re trying to choose a type of roofing shingle for your home. Both tile and slate shingles can last a long time, and both can be aesthetically appealing, however there are some significant differences between the two. The tile roofing shingles are comprised of composite materials i most cases, while slate shingles are comprised of stone or synthetic materials. Many of the tile shingles that people are familiar with are the red clay Spanish shingles that are commonly seen in southern regions, and atop Mexican restaurants. Tile shingles can be brittle and are more prone to falling apart when exposed to rough weather, where as slate tiles are designed to be durable.
In the opinion of most people, roofing slate shingles are more durable and more suitable for rougher climates. Even so, both tile and slate roofing shingles are considered to be durable and resistant to weather to some extent, sot he impression should not be had that clay shingles are weak, and they are not necessarily inferior to slate shingles. Slate shingles are generally easier to install as well, which decreases the costs of installation, although, depending on the type of shingle they may be more expensive than tile shingles. In general though, slate shingles are some of the most expensive types of shingles because of the material they are comprised of. Slate shingles are made of natural materials, which are more limited than synthetics, and significantly more difficult to create and/or mine. Light colored roofs are known to decrease the amount of solar energy absorbed by panels on the roof, so this is important to consider when deciding between slate and tile roofing, especially if you;re considering the clay tile types.
