When I went to visit Bob and Christa Stamper’s garden in Zionsville, Pennsylvania, a few weeks ago, Bob pointed out this tree, and I was horrified… Holy cow! He says, “This is the common native honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos, USDA Hardiness Zones 3-7). A long time ago I ordered 10 plants of a thornless variety to create a small, airy grove, but this one has reverted. The conspicuous thorns on the trunk are modified branches. Apparently this is an adaptation against large herbivores in the geologic past. I like the thorns for their prehistoric appearance, but one day Christa, my wife, was weeding on the slope by the tree and lost her balance. She reached out to the tree for support and painfully stabbed herself. Needless to say, she has no great love for this tree.

Drastic Cuts

Posted on July 20th, 2011

I’m into my fourth summer at Poison Ivy Acres, and this means dealing with plants that have put in the wrong place. Planting that ‘Morning Light’ Miscanthus in the entry garden seemed like a good idea at the time. Now that it’s larger, however, I see that this placement was a mistake.

What would you do?

I’m not sure how I feel about this little patio at the Cross Estate Gardens in Bernardsville, New Jersey. I like the globe/circle theme, but perhaps they should have embraced it a little more whole-heartedly and put another globe-shaped shrub in the central pot. Or maybe a massive fountain of miscanthus, perhaps ‘Morning Light’ (Miscanthus sinensis ‘Morning Light’, USDA Hardiness Zones 5-9) to create a stronger focal point. What do you think?
