Wave Hill chairs at Innisfree

Posted on July 10th, 2011

Everywhere you go at Innisfree, you find these wonderful chairs. They’re generally called Wave Hill chairs (you’ll find oodles of them at Wave Hill, too), but they were designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1918. The only thing marring this peaceful scene were the geese. It’s hard to enjoy the view when you can’t take your eyes off the ground for fear of stepping in something nasty!

Want your own Wave Hill chair? Wave Hill sells plans so that you can make one!

From the Field: Bill Buck in Tasmania

Bill Buck and associate in the austral winter snow of Tasmania

The International Botanical Congress (IBC) is held once every six years, and this time it is being held in Melbourne, Australia in mid-July. I have visited Australia twice in recent years, most recently in 2009 in Western Australia, and in 2007 in Tasmania. Both of these trips were to attend field meetings of an Australia-New Zealand bryological group. My motivation to attend the Tasmanian meeting had been to better acquaint myself with another south temperate moss flora so that I could compare it to my study area in southernmost Chile. Despite the constant threat of leeches, I loved Tasmania and thought attending the IBC would be a good opportunity to return.

Cleaning House Gutters: Gutter Getter vs. iRobot Looj

Posted on July 10th, 2011

Do your house gutters need a good cleaning? This is my opinion about the iRobot Looj and the Gutter Getter.

They both clean gutters! The iRobot Looj is a remote controlled device and the Gutter Getter is literally a handheld scoop.

I prefer the Gutter Getter. But, I have also put a link to the iRobot Looj if you are interested in a more sophisticated remote controlled device.

After watching a video demonstration, I was not impressed. In the beginning of the video, the man said you didnt need a ladder. However, you still needed a ladder to put the device in the gutter and to take it out.

Then, it seemed to work really hard going back and forth to move the leaves out of the gutter and the gutter did not look that clean.

Finally when the device came to a large bunch of leaves in the gutter, the video stopped so I couldnt tell if it cleaned that section or not.

Garden Designers at Home

Posted on July 9th, 2011

In the shops now!!

I’ve got a new book out – ‘Garden Designers at Home’ – about what garden designers get up to on their home turf. Got to admit it wasn’t my idea, but the publishers’. An obvious concept really, the sort of thing which publishers (we authors grudgingly admit) are quite good at thinking up. The title and the concept kind of hint that perhaps what they do at home is completely different to the gardens which we see in magazines or garden shows – that all they have is a patch of grass with a swing for the kids and a row of cabbages. Of course, none of the ones featured in this book are like that, although in researching one designer’s public profile online I came across a scurrilous article in a British daily newspaper (one of the ‘red-top rags’ of course) which claimed that neighbours were complaining that the front garden of a well-known television gardener was full of rubbish and old beer bottles. But no-one should bel
