Follow Your Nose – Hiring a Contractor to Discover Hidden Mold

Posted on December 1st, 2011

Recently I accompanied a prospective buyer on a post home inspection.  The inspection does very little to identify mold in a home since most inspectors are hired by the seller and do not want to hurt the possible sale.

I was hired to identify the odor coming from the powder room off the main hallway.  I did not recommend testing in this situation because mold was visible.  I suspected the odor was mildew or mold and mold like darkened wood was visible on the base of the vanity.  I recommended a remediation plan for the removal of the vanity and cleaning of the mold that I suspected was there.  The seller agreed to hire me to perform the mold remediation.  I set up the proper containment around the powder room and set up the negitive air machines.  My crew and I were wearing proper PPE (personal protective equipment) and the demo work started.

I found that my assumptions were correct and that mold was growing on the drywall, wood on the vanity and on the insulation.  A layer of yellowish mold about 1/4 inch thick was on the drywall inside the wall cavity. I remov

Ranch House Gets Faux Paint, Woodworking Touches

Posted on November 29th, 2011

This house has been ahead of its time since it was built in 1950. Unlike most ranch houses of its era, it had a family room connected to the kitchen and walls of glass looking out to the back garden. For the past 34 years, it has been carefully maintained, updated and adorned by the current homeowners. The house had great bones to start, including gracious formal living and dining rooms and a burgundy and pink tiled central bathroom that remains in mint condition.

The homeowners opened their doors to the Rose Garden Homes Tour this fall.

One of the homeowners, a retired schoolteacher, is the artisan of the duo and took his talents to add color, texture and craftsmanship to the kitchen and bathrooms especially.

Why Is Selecting The Right Office Chair Mechanism So Important? The Function Factor

Posted on November 29th, 2011

So what’s the big deal with an office chair mechanism?

Imagine you had a large lawn that needed to be mowed every week in summer, it’s unlikely you would use a push mower. Its lack of flexibility would make your task unbearable as you huffed and puffed cutting it.

Well the wrong mechanism can easily land you in a similar situation and make your working day intolerable.

In this article we’re going to take a look at what controls every office chair – the chair mechanism.

Here are the 3 areas we’re focusing on:

  • What exactly is an office chair mechanism?
  • What functions on an office chair mechanism are vital?
  • What types of office chair mechanisms should you avoid?

Let’s begin with the mechanism itself, the chair’s gearbox.

What exactly is an office chair mechanism?

Office Chair Mechanism On Underside Of HÅG Chair

The mechanism is the heart of any office chair, quite simply it is the means by which the core functions of your chair are controlled.

It’s mounted underneath the chair seat and because it’s hidden from view most people never give it a second thought.

Which is just as well because they can look pretty strange.

Seating manufacturers generally do a pretty poor job in explaining what the different functions of a mechanism are for. They assume that b

Getting Down To The Nuts and Bolts of Fixings and Fasteners

Posted on November 26th, 2011

Getting down to the “nuts and bolts” has always been synonymous with looking at the essential parts, integral to the successful completion of a project; when you’re talking about a construction project, saying this is as pertinent as ever. It is easy to overlook fixings and fasteners when you are first planning a project, but without the nuts and bolts your build will never get built.

There are hundreds of different types of fasteners, each designed specifically so that you have the right pieces holding parts of your project together. You will need to consider a number of factors when choosing the right fastener; if you are building something out of wood (for instance), then there is a good chance that you will want to use wood screws.
