June Garden To-Do List 2011
Posted on July 27th, 2011
There are always a ton of things to do in the garden when the growing season is in full swing. Hopefully most of the garden is set up and ready to go with only general maintenance needing the gardeners attention but this isn’t always the case. Sometimes projects pop up, problems arise, and then sometimes we haven’t gotten everything done as early as we would have liked to. To help me get organized this month (and maybe you too!) here is my June Garden to-do list for 2011. For organization purposes I’ve categorized the to-do list into Projects and General Maintenance.

A garden house with a very specific purpose

When I saw this little hut from across the lawn in the display gardens at Matterhorn Nursery in Spring Valley, New York, I was instantly smitten. I love the structure itself, its massive green backdop, and the plantings that surround it. But it wasn’t until I walked up to it and looked inside that I fell completely in love… Take a look!

What Not To Do In The Vegetable Garden
Posted on July 25th, 2011
You hear a lot of us garden bloggers always talking about what to do in the vegetable garden, but what about what not to do? We all make mistakes. We all do things that can be categorized under “OOPS”. I’m going to share one of those “OOPS” moments with you today that quite frankly I’m disgusted with myself for doing. What was my mistake in the garden? I was very carefully weeding the Bermuda grass from around the base of my cucumber plants when out came something other than a nasty Bermuda grass rhizome. It was the shallow roots of one cucumber vine! My poor cucumbers when into shock so bad that I doubt they will recover. I’ll have to replant. Fortunately I had several vines up on this trellis and at least one of them is still alive. I added some shredded paper mulch and newspapers to try to keep the moisture in the soil in the off chance that my cucumbers have a chance. I have other cucumbers in other areas of the vegetable garden so I won’t be completely without cucumbers but these were pickling cucumbers that I was pretty excited about. I’ll

Something is Wrong With My Front Garden Plan
Posted on July 6th, 2011
My garden is made up of a series of island garden beds. Each one is “designed” (I say that very loosely) to create the pathways that appear in between the gardens. To me a pathway is what really makes garden. A good path let’s you see everything there is to see, leads you down unexpected turns, and really enhances a garden. Plants are integral for a garden and structures are important too but you don’t go anywhere without a pathway. But this post isn’t really about pathways, it’s about one garden bed in particular that I need help with. You see, there’s just something wrong with it. Maybe it’s the plantings, maybe it’s the size and shape, or maybe it’s something else entirely.
In this bed I’ve brought lavender plants from my in-laws garden. They were the result of the natural layering of several lavender plants. I also have several irises, a blackberry lily, ‘Husker’s Red’ penstemon, and even pumpkins!
